1983 35hp johnson getting hot

Sounds like thermostat stuck closed Remove thermostat check for corrosion and test it toss it in pot of hot water to c if it opens.
Or you can decor ( cut off everything so u just have a plate with hole) and reinstall it sat run engine c if it gets hot if not replace thermostat
