Big problem with past OMC's during winter storage.
Trying to avoid same on new Mercs.
I cannot expose port-side thread to install "Davis" sealer-lubricator.

"U,

This is a common problem. There is an o-ring in the tilt tube which is supposed to prevent this from happening, but it fails frequently.

Your only hope is to keep the steering ram well greased with water proof grease.

" Thanks, I will. My current 75 (one winter) seems alright this season. I'm currently installing another 75 and a 50 and had wanted to use a Davis product with their lube - but can't expose any thread. My '96 OMC's had no such seal, and when lucky enough to remove as opposed to destroying the assmbly, I used a reaming tool to cut away hardened grease from the inside of the tube. This winter I'll remove the steering for preventitive cleaning... unfortunately that requires removing the engine. "

If it is possible to get access to the helm once a month, when the boat's in storage, all it takes is a hard over left and right a few times to keep the parts free. This also goes for controls and cables.. my .02
