runs better without cover.

evinrude 33, 1970 33002M,Sat out last season, was hard to start. After new batt. fuel tank, fuel line and carb cleaning and adjustment, she runs well WOT & idles. But with the cover on starves for air, open access door and she recovers. any remedy would be appreciated.
 
If this is when running in a barrel or test tank, that is normal as the engine would be drawing in its exhaust fumes into its carburetor.

If this is while running underway, either the air intakes are clogged or a bad exhaust leak exists.
 
It happened last week on lake, and still testing in barrel, so how difficult is repair of exhaust leak?

Look for the exhaust leak first ! ---Should be easy to find if you squirt a little extra oil into it while running.
 
I tried the oil squirt, so much smoke i couldn't see if i had leak or not. I placed small fan,as to blow by front of engine, and got good results. Thanks joereeves & racerone for quick replies, I think I'm cured!:cool:
