Merc.50 power loss, power gain, loss, gain??

Getting ready to dig into this motor and find the Gremlin...

The motor starts pretty good...idles well after warming up....and runs pretty good (although not at top speed).

After cruising a couple of minutes it will lose power, and not be responsive to throttle. If I squeeze the bulb, it doesn't help. Then, after a couple minutes, it will suddenly jump back up to speed...then lose power again later....then gain it....repeat. It's all very random...

Any ideas what to check first?

Test the stator resistance especially right when it fails to respond. You may have some gunk floating inside the carbs that blocks the HS jets. Take them apart, clean them and blow dry w/100 psi compressed air.
