Whats involved in converting a 1977 35 HP Johnson (Model 35EL77H) from long shaft to short.

I may need to convert my 1977 35 HP Johnson from long shaft to short. What is the difficulty involved? Are used parts available and the way to go? Could use some advice on this.....
 
An important detail is whether it came from the factory as a long shaft or if it had a 5 inch extention installed.-------If it has the 5" spacer it is a much easier job that if you need to change out the exhaust housing.--------Provide all the details you can.
