Convert to electric start

I have a 1974 20 hp Mercury manual start that I would like to put an electric start on. The flywheel is already geared so I guess that is a plus. I have tried to search the forums for previous threads but no luck. If this has been discussed before just point me in the right direction. I have talked to several different shops and no one is really interested in doing the work so I guess I am let to do it my self. My local shop said if I can find all of the parts they would be glad to help but finding the parts will be a problem.

The starters for that motor--there are two types--are hard to find used, and one of them is very expensive.

Can you post a photo showing where the starter goes? From it we can determine which type you need.

Jeff

A lot depends on where you live , used ones can be found where these 20's were popular.------------------It is not impossible to fabricate a bracket to adapt any other small starter.-------Not a big deal if you do some looking and research.

..."It is not impossible to fabricate a bracket to adapt any other small starter.-------"

Agreed if you have the tools and technique (like me: I even build my own props).

Jeff

Just my luck ! Would you happen to know the part number of the starter that fits this motor serial # 3758427? There was on on ebay yesterday that the auction ended this morning for $35 that looked rough and there is one on there tonight for $225 with a part # of 50-47216 . It has a "loose lug" . These starters looked different from each other , I'd just like an idea of what I am looking for. As far as making a bracket, I think I could do that, or get enough help from friends I have in machine shops to make it work. If I could just get enough information as to what other starter that might work maybe I could get the ball rolling. Thanks for all the help so far.

There were two model numbers back in 1974 for a mercury 20 hp and they were 1200204 & 1200224. When you look at the parts list it shows the parts catalog part number to be 90-65145 MERC 200 PARTS LIST.

Here's the list for the electric components for your engine, The starter part number is in there.
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...RIC+COMPONENTS

And here is all the parts for your serial number range.

Your starter part # would be 50-47216.

I just happened to stumbleupon outboard service bulletin No. 74-6 ELECTRIC START KIT IDENTIFICATION when closing out of the system, Here is some info about it.

I notice a few 'minor' items are missing: The starter and flywheel, for starters (punn intended).

Jeff
Thanks Jeff, It appears like Graham may have some of the missing items covered in the link below.
http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?149481-20-horsepower-mercury-outboard

Merc may have anticipated the flywheel already geared for a starter in the service bulletin:cool: But you never know, it was the 70's:p:DJ/K.

Also tsigmon, at some point 50-47216 had Superseded to 50-97949A1
50-97949A1 (NLA) STARTER ASSY
50-47216 STARTER MOTOR
