B-W 73C 'Whirring' Noise

I have a pair of Volvo TD70's driving through model 73C-1 Borg-Warner Velvet Drives. Often, though not always, when the PT engine is idling in neutral, the transmission emits a 'whirring' or light, rapid clicking noise (if you're old enough to remember clipping a playing card to the frame of your Mustang bike so that the card would contact the spokes, try to imagine that sound).

As soon as I put pressure on the gear control, that is, before it's fully in gear, but as soon as the valve begins to open, the noise stops, and remains silent while the transmission is in gear. When I take it out of gear, sometimes the noise restarts and other times it doesn't.

Any ideas, guys?

A rattle noise while in neutral is caused sometimes by the engine missing or running rough at idle. Even low compression in one hole will cause this. So before you tear into the transmission, check engine performance.
