Engine hours indicator

Usually hour meter is part of the tachometer. If you have digital tachometer, it is notorious at not displaying the engine hours. It still records, but display stops working after few years. I dont know of any way to make it show hours. I usually install my own mechanical cheap hour meter from the marine store, hook up to terminal 61 on the back of the factory warning panel. This way it only records hours with engine running. I use this for maintenance intervals, and manual fuel burn calculations.
 
I have the same problem with one of my tachs. I understand there are some shops capable of fixing the hour meter display.
