NS5B Gear Case Oil Plug (5hp)

I removed upper/lower oil plugs and did not see a gasket,however oil was clear when drained.
The parts catalogue shows a gasket on U/L oil plugs.
Question: Will an "O" ring serve as a proper gasket?
Many thanks for any info.

This is the fiber seal that should be used. An o-ring will likely push out and distort when tightening the plugs, so won't work.
