Previously stated: I have a 1992 Nissan 90 2stroke o/b motor. Took boat out and motor died at about 3500 rpm restarted and limped back to dock. Took boat to authorized nissan repair shop. They say boat has good compression however something " broke" in motor and needs to be disassembled to pinpoint. Question: What does good compression rule out and any ideas what might be making a " clacking" or tapping or slight knocking when boat is idling or slight rev ??? Also, what has to be done to motor to tell what is wrong and how long does it take? ie pull head. Do these motors have valve springs?? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Start with the Factory service manual, available from any dealer, including me. No, there aren't any valve springs. The knocking could be a bad rod bearing, or wrist pin, or nothing more than something rubbing near the recoil. You need a better diagnosis, could be anything at this point. Pick one system (fuel, ignition, etc.), and check it over to rule out that system, then go on to the next.
