1981 Johnson 15HP has a sloppy throttle

The throttle on my 1981 15HP Johnson (just got it) turns a long way before increasing the speed, Is there a way to make it more responsive? Otherwise starts and runs great.
 
Check the screw holding the grip assembly, the gear connecting each moving part, the arm to the timing lever. If needed remove the screw on the grip assembly and see if the plastic plate has been damaged.
