I got this motor from my uncle who meant to restore it. after freeing up the cylinder, it started right up. after replacing a few gaskets and cleaning up what little rust there was, i ran it again, and for about 5 minutes it ran then just quit. i took of the side panel, where you can clearly see a brown substance built up. Could this substance be the cause of the engine stopping? or is it something else? please help.

I'm guessing the rings are stuck(rusted) and cauasing low compression...try a 16 to 1 fuel oil mixture...that might give it enough compression to start and if you can keep it running, the rings may break free. The other alternative is to dis-assemble and evaluate the internals.
