lots of good advice on this site so please help me 454 xl carb eletric fuel pump not sure year maybe mid 90's fuel pump only comes on when key is in start position motor will start for couple seconds then stop no power to pump when key is in on position where does the pump get its power from ex key alternater thankyou very much cape breton
 
Have you been doing any rewiring lately? It sounds like some one wired the fuel pump to the starter side of things. So when you key the switch the fuel pump run's and when you let off it does not. try running a jumper wire to the fuel pump then try starting it, that will eliminate that any way. Just remember to unhook the jumper wire when you are done testing as you don't want to leave it hot full time partticuarly when you are not aboard.
 
likely to be the oil pressure switch. the wiring is likely to be ok. the quick and dirty debug is to jump the oil pressure switch. If it runs with the jumper, replace the oil pressure switch. Don't run with the jumper - the oil pressure switch is a mandatory safety feature as well as a 'good idea'.

thanks for the replies found prblem little purple wire broke off alternater hooked it up and ran motor for 20 min thanks for the advice cape breton
