Dry running.

Jim, don't do it. The impeller is made of rubber - and the water acts as a lubricant. Running dry will destroy the impeller quickly.
 
Thanks. I got some bad info. The guy I bought it from said it was OK. I started to hear a squeal from the engine and shut it off immediately. I hope replacing the impeller is not too difficult if I screwed it up.
