Merc 200 series 20hp 1973 jumping into gear from neutral

Hi guys, i was wondering if anyone could shed some light or perhaps has had and cured the this problem, my engine ( i believe to be 1973) merc 200 series 20 hp wont stay in idle, it always jumps in to forward gear, reverse is fine although a little effort is required to get it in....if anyone can help or has some info it would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.Hippy.
 
Follow this link below exactly (copy/paste). It will give you a parts diagram of the shift assembly. Take note of parts 11 and 12. These are little flat "springs" that are supposed to keep the linkage in the (gear) you select. If one of them is shot it will "slip" into or out of gear. Number 12 is discontinued, so hope for the best :)
