Speedometer Tube ?

Greetings,

-1978 Mercury V6 150hp

Can someone explain were the speedometer tube is supposed to be routed? I have the lower unit removed and it appears that the tube would just go out the same hole that the shift shaft exits from. I also have a foot or two of tubing that exits the boat. The end attached to the lower unit has a barbed coupler. There is plenty of length, I just don't want to route it the wrong way.

That sounds like how my 115 HP is routed. Make sure it is on the top of the bundle of wires and cable going thru the grommet so it doesn't get crushed.
 
Are there any zip ties or anything holding the tube loosely against the shift shaft? I don't think it would just hang out in the open.
