Transom plate?

Hey all, been following posts, and while I have been boating for a couple of years now, I've really only done very simple maintanence, and have a very limited knowledge of marine termanology. (I still say left and right most of the time instead of port and starboard). Having said that, I noticed people talking about serial numbers, for the engine, outdrive, and transom. I know what the engine and outdrive are.... Um, whats a transom, or transom plate? Gotta learn from someone, you all haven't done me wrong yet, so when you're done laughing, could ya fill me in? After you remove the engine and the drive what you have left is the Transom Assembly (transom plate)

So, its basically the motor mounts, and part of the hull?

It is the part that bolts to the hull and holds the engine and the drive.
