" The tachometer attached to my 1986 DT115 gives extraneous readings. For instance it rarely reads less than 4400 rpm when I suspect it should be around 3500. When the speed is increased, it will fall to around 4000 rpm. Where could the extraneous signal be coming from? "

According to the wiring diagram that I looked at your tach wires directly to the magneto coil.

Is it possible that the dial on the back of the tach is set on the wrong number?

If not maybe the wire between the tach and the magneto is faulty. It should be a yellow wire. Make sure it is continuous.
