75 hp merc 3cyl 2 stroke cold water pee

except for a stuck open thermostat can anyone tell me why my engine would be peeing cold water. I am replacing the therm and poppet, but I am still concerned why the motor would have run a little hot in the water and with the hose on during the flush out the water was cold.
