I have a 1980 MD11C with a MSB gearcase with reverse gear (1.91:1) that will not go into gear. During a long recent trip my engine was pushed real hard and the transmission began to refuse to go into gear. The shift linkage was going its full range of motion and the gear case was not run low on oil, but when shifted into forward or reverse the prop shaft would not turn. Fortunately when enough engine rpms, it would engage and the shaft would begin to rotate slowly then finally start spinning normally, but by the time we made it into port it could not be made go into gear at all. The only strange symptom that was noticed prior to the shift problem was a slight unusual noise as power was applied. Any ideas or am I looking at an expensive rebuild? If anyone has any questions please ask. I know this post is probably not the best worded but I am working on little sleep after being at sea for two weeks.
