Engine runs fine at idle but stalls when giving gas...

I just put my boat in the water this weekend and it has a mercruiser 170 that was rebuilt last year. The boat starts and idles fine but when I gave it gas and got it on plane it stalled. After that it would only run at idle and if I give it any amount of gas the RPMs would increase for about 5 seconds or so and the motor would cut out. Strarting it back up was hard every time it cut out. The distibutor was replaced, new cap and rotor, and timing was set. I'm thinking I may have a bad fuel pump???

I have a Merc 25HP 4 Stroke BigFoot with the same problem. Was running fine but, now it will stall if I give it gas. Doesn't matter if it is in neutral or not, it still wants to die when I give it gas......my question is this. Does the engine pull a vacuum on the carb when you accelerate?

majordadsage I would suggest you post your own question on a new thread.just trying to help, try the merc outboard forum on the home page.Good luck!!
