I have a 1995 Sunbird with a Volvo Penta SX outdrive that I am in the process of taking apart. I had experienced some vibrations and odd noises coming from the outdrive so I decided to check the gear oil. The gear oil had quite a bit of metal shavings in there so I am now in the process of dissassembly to determine the cause.
I am in the process of taking apart the lower unit. So far, I have taken the lower drive shaft out and now I am in the process of trying to remove the vertical shaft; so far the upper bearing ont he vertical shaft looks good and the rearmost bearing on the lower driveshaft looks good. I have removed the bottom nut from the vertical shaft but the gear remains on there (BTW I am not using the special tools to do this). Is there a trick to removing this gear when you don't have the special tools to do so?
