No shut down

I have a 1973 24' Sea Ray w/ a 255 hp ford 302 block mercruiser. I started it on land to prep for putting in. Everything was great until I shut down. The motor wouldn't shut down. I tried to trace it from the key to the relay on the motor. It seem to be at the motor, but I don't know where to go from there.
Any ideas?

You lost a ground connection somewhere.........Do you have a starter with no solenoid on it and it is mounted away from the starter?

Check the wire at the starter that supplies 12 vdc to the coil during the start phase; it may have a bare spot rubbing on a continually charged circuit. I don't remember the color of the wire and no longer have a manual to look at.
