02' BF30 high rpm fuel starve?

Backcountry

Hello:

I recently purchased a used 02' skiff with a Honda 30. The motor has low hours but has endured poor maintenance in it's life here in the Keys. The previous owner said he had the carburetors rebuilt and filters replaced, and it's run great until yesterday. Though it starts good, idles strong, and runs up to 3/4 throttle just fine, I'm getting intermittent drops of power at high rpms- the occasional "hunting." This seems to occur after 15 minutes of running on plane, and gets worse the more the motor runs throughout the day.

How should I begin my troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance for your help. Kevin

First determine if the problem is ignition related or fuel related.

Easiest way to eliminate spark related is to take a timing light out on your next trip and watch how the light flashes when it fails. Do this for each cylinder. If the light flashes steadily on all cylinders, then it is most likely fuel related. If it flashes differently, then the first thing to do is change your spark plugs (used NGK DR7EA only) and try again.

At least this way, you are only looking in one direction.

That is a start anyway...

Mike
