Borg Warner Velvet Drive has play in drive

I am replacing my motors in my Carver and when I removed the transmissions I saw that the starbord transmission has about 3/4" travel before engaging. By that I mean by turning the shaft on the rear of the tranny it will turn 3/4" either way freely. The other is tight, only a tiny amont of play.

That tranny has always "clunked" going from forward to reverse. Not too bad, and I always took care to do so with a pause.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Hi, most likely the coupling and reduction splines are worn out. Remove the coupling nut than pull off the coupling to check the splines ---do not reuse the nut --get a new one.

Well, great news, I think. I took a closer look and it looks like the coupling nut was slightly loose. Couple of taps (it was very tight) and the slack is gone.

Think I am good?

thanks
