I have this motor on my boat, and I am used to decoding the model numbers, but this one had a feature that is unknown to me, any help would be appreciated.

J150VXSIG

I understand it means it is a Johnson 150hp, with a 25" shaft & a 2001 model year. It is the "V" I am interested in. From the model code refrence sheets I see online a "V" in that position means "Special Gearcase". What exactly does that mean?

Thanks

I don't remember where I saw it. The early ocean pro models had more stainless steel and some other corrosion resistant features. Within a couple years all the other motors were brought up to the same spec. O/P became more of a selling feature and the white paint was attractive. With the different color, parts like the cowl and outer castings have to have a different part number to define which color it's painted. Therefore, the engine model number needs to be different for ease of parts ordering.
