Johnson/Evinrude remote controls 1972 50 hp

Hi. This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyways. I've got a 1972 50 hp Evinrude, with the push button forward-reverse controls. Can I change over to the single lever Johnson controls for a 50 hp (same year)?

thanks, Bill

Re: Johnson/Evinrude remote controls

I went and looked at both motors and they both work the same way, so I would guess that they are the same ......Evinrude has push buttons and Johnson has a switch in the control box, so yes I think it will work... learn something new everyday....

If it's the same year yes as long as it's from another outboard and not stern drive.

Re: Johnson/Evinrude remote controls

Yes, the johnson control box is from a 72 outboard as well, and it's on the same style/length boat as mine. I just don't like fumbling for push buttons when I am used to pulling the handle back. Makes for lousy docking!!!

thanks, that will be one of my many boat projects this summer
