I have a 1988 gamefisher 5 model 225 587500 I am pretty sure the water pump/impeller needs to be replaced. Last season I took the motor out and it was smoking alot and would cut out at times it was sucking water in and i checked the gas/oil and it was a good mix. Any suggestions would help the water pump i found was a little over a hundred dollars and really hate to spend money trying to fix this motor and not get anywhere.
 
That doesn't sound right on that price. I know you can get the impeller for between $20-40 depending on where you look. E-bay is a great source for parts. I just replaced the impeller on a 7.5 and I used a mercury impeller. I'm not sure if the shaft size is much different, but you can check. I'll have to take a look and see what the part# was, but $100 for a complete pump is crazy.
