in water 4/15 - how do i check shaft logs

Also how should I check the packings? She seems to drip correctly last fall, but will remove nut and look at shafts as I have some old score spots at packings (spots seems stable since I repacked with correct size square teflon). Thanks
 
I'd say if you are gonna take them apart, especially when dry, just replace the packing. Also, if equipped, check the hose holding your stuffing box to the log. I can't seem to get more than 10 years out of mine. Don't forget the hose clamps, too.

The shafts should be centered in the logs. If it eyeballs ok and the shaft spins freely, you are probably good for another season.
 
and make sure you check the bottom of the clamps. A lot of times they look ok from the bottoms are rotted out. That's exactly how mine were with two of the four broken.
