Crusader 220 Starter motor- relay?

Recently replaced both solenoids on my 2 starters, one engine has a newer looking solenoid type device (black with some wires that just reach the starter solenoid mounted to stater)
other has a real old looking thing

question is what are these things?? I was able to start engine without them by giving 12V to the S on the standard solenoid (part of starter)

also any wiring info for this part and the starter?

thanks
bob

Based on your description, they sound like the slave solenoids. They are used so that the harness length used, from the engine to the key and back, doesn't suffer any significant voltage drop that may cause the starter mounted solenoid to have operating issues.

The wiring diagram is in the owner's manual. I posted a searchable version last year (mid-80's, with the Thermo-Electron label), if I remember correctly. If I didn't, send a PM with an email that will take a ~6MB pdf file.
