Water pump rotation

1985 270 Crusader starboard engine (right hand rotation) engine water pump is starting to go bad. My question is will a standard automotive water pump work on this engine? Ive looked back thru older posts assuming that this has been discussed before, but didnt see anything. My assumption is that the pump will work turning either direction. Thanks for the help.
 
The pump will work - you just have to be careful with the impeller installed on the replacement.

Most (cheap) auto pumps use one stamped from steel and it will be for the auto application (LH'ed). I've seen the RH pumps made with a stamped RH impeller as well as a cast Uni-directional impeller. Any good machinist can swap the old for the new (impellers) in a couple minutes.
