1998 Mercury 225 hp EFI Saltwater Series

I have a 1998 Mercury 225 EFI Saltwater Series that keeps eating up the belt that goes from alternator to flywheel. In the past year I have had to replace the belt 5 times. Its not cheap at $35 a pop. Yesterday I put a 2' level on the alternator pully to see if it was in line with the flywheel, it wasnt, 1/4" higher than the flywheel. Then I checked another mercury and it to was 1/4" higher. If this is standard, why does my engine keep breaking belts?
