jhonson 1976 40 hp steering link arm help

1976 jhonson 40el76r question what does the el and r stand for. link arm is a fixed pcs connecks to steering cable and then to front of motor i can get adjusted where it turns fine one way but not good the other way its seems short about 1" is there another adjustment i can make thanks

40 = Horsepower
E = Electric
L = Long Shaft
76 = Year
R = Factory run number (Of no consequence)

Steering problem = Usually a debris build up within the steering cable at the engine end.
