55 hp chrysler outboard

Hey guys,

Got an old 55 hp chrysler outboard motor on my boat.

Motor is in good working order except for one problem. The motor fires up fine, starts great but just is very hard to get into gear. When i push throttle forward it is as if in neutral warm up. Every now and then it will click into gear but it takes alot and when i accelerate more than 5-10 knots it loses gear again. Also the reverse works fine and will gear up every time.

Any ideas on whats happening?

Thanks

Clutch dog.Probably wore down edges.
Post the year and serial #.Fill out the profiletoo.
It might be possible to repair the edges or just turn it around.
boat.net Chrysler parts.Look for 55hp about 76Year Part#24
They are close.with the right serial you can get the right pic.J

Ok so model is 557 gg and serial is 4354. Which part is the clutch?? Where is it located?? Left for amateur question. New to this all

Thanks!!

My first reply.Go to boats.net Chrysler parts then put in year 77 and go to gear case look for part #23.It's called clutch.
The part is still available.
You'll need to make sure that the linkage is ok first.
Put it in the water.Un-hook the cable and shift by hand.If it still does it then it's bad.J

Ok. Do you know of any good 'how to' to check linkage??

I will look for the part and I need to check linkage. Will keep you updated.

Thanks a lot mate.
