Replacing a 1978 Johnson 140 with something newer

I'm looking for some advice; we currently have a 1978 Johnson 140 on an 18' Wellcraft and we are trying to replace it with at least a 2008 or newer, but we're not quite sure how to ensure we get the proper shaft length. This is our first experience with outboards, we've always owned bigger boats with inboard motors, so we're kinda novices at buying outboards. Can anyone tell us how to measure shaft length to ensure we get the proper replacement motor?

You could use a 25" shaft---------------Most 25" motors can be bolted on ( raised ) with the holes in the motor's brackets.----------That would get you the proper fit.
