Steering Cable Tension Adjustment 1996 90 hp

Gentlemen,

I have a 1996 Stratos 258V with a 90 hp Evinrude. The steering system is not hydraulic.

The motor will easily swing all the way to one side anytime. Even when the boat is NOT under power; this includes while just sitting on the trailer. The weight of the motor causes it to "fall" over to one side.

Is there a cable or steering tension adjustment that would prevent this? If so, where is it and how do I adjust it?

Thank you.

Re: Steering Cable Tension Adjustment

As much of a nuisance as it may be, just imagine ALL the folks that have the opposite situation. Call Stratos and see who's steering was installed. some of the basic cable systems have a friction screw and you may be lucky....

if not, the best 'bang for the buck' would probably be a "no feedback" cable setup. The bulletproof approach would be to swap over to a hydraulic system.

Depending on what steering system you have Rack or rotary there are usually no adjustments. Yes, a NFB system will solve the problem and since it is a 90hp that would be the cheapest way out.

Take a careful look when you are on a trailer and see if there is any angle to the motor. A trailered boat is not always 100% level so the motor swings easy. While under power the torque of the motor will also cause the motor to want to turn, adjust your trim tab to counter that.

Be happy the motor swings so easy, nothing is binding!
