Can any one tell me if the upper unit gears from a mercruiser s/n 2610?13 23/24 be replaced with the 24/24 tooth gears from another mercruiser ? the bearings in the upper units of both drives are Identical the gears both fit the drive shafts and driven shaft. is there a problem with this process. please help.

Yes but how many ways can I count the teeth. No sass intended. really don't I count every tooth on each gear, if so my old gears were 23/24/ and that was confirmed by the manual the new teeth I have came out of a mercruiser alpha 1 which according to the seloc manual is interchangeable (the upper unit vs upper unit) pre-alpha or an R model to alpha-1. the manual said the innards were much the same. as fasr as connecting to the lower unit. my question is what can I expect the out come to be if I attempt to use the 24/24 gears rather than the 23/24 gears. my problem is that I have the 24/24 at hand with no money to envest it is either a do or quit situation.

There is no 23 T listed , GEN II lists as 1.62 so it could be a 23T gear.
Either one will work ok with a 6 cylinder motor. The following is from SEI.com
1995 and older (22/20 tooth upper, 17/28 tooth lower) 1.5 ratio
1996 and newer (22/20 tooth upper, 13/21 tooth lower) 1.47 ratio
1995 and older (24/24 tooth upper, 17/28 tooth lower) 1.65 ratio
1996 and newer (24/24 tooth upper, 13/21 tooth lower) 1.62 ratio
1995 and older (17/19 tooth upper, 17/28 tooth lower) 1.84 ratio
1996 and newer (17/19 tooth upper, 13/21 tooth lower) 1.81 ratio
1995 and older (20/24 tooth upper, 17/28 tooth lower) 1.98 ratio
1996 and newer (20/24 tooth upper, 13/21 tooth lower) 1.94 ratio
