Quicksilver gas tank pickup tube

Hi - wondering if someone can tell me what originally was used as a pickup tube in a late 80's model Merc QS plastic gas tank? I aquired one recently and found that someone had attached a vinyl tube to a simple hose barb inside the tank. Needless to say I found a million pieces of trashed plastic and a little pickup screen in the bottom.

I've stuck a piece of fuel line on there but the screen doesn't fit even close. Did it have a brass tube or something? Gotta figure something effective soon.

I have a couple of older tanks and the pick-up tube itself is (plastic) - kinda like the air line on fish tanks. One is clear the other is black and the little screen pick-up just connects to the end. They are not rubber like a regular gas line - more like material oil lines are made from on oil injected outboards.
 
I find those fuel pick-up hoses in pieces all the time.--------------------Common failure and caused by substandard materials in these tanks.
