Are Exhaust Tubes A Good Idea?

While R&R'ing my OMC Cobra outdrive (2.3L Ford), I read about something called "exhaust tubes".

IIRC, these take the place of the exhaust bellows. The exhaust then no longer flows thru the outdrive and the center of the prop, but exits at the pivot housing/bell housing.

Is this a good idea and will it work on a 2.3L?

the reason someone would want to do that, is because the exhaust bellows (on Mercruisers) is very tedious to install. the special install tool costs more than the cheater tube

A quick search yielded no tube replacements for the OMC bellows.

What gets me about the OMC Cobra exhaust system is relatively little exhaust actually makes it to the prop. Exhaust exists thru the slits in the bottom of the bellows, and a large loss thru the built in slot just above the zinc on the front of the outdrive. There is considerable noise emitting from these two places.

Okay, an exhaust tube may not be available commercially.

How about a thru the hull exhaust with a flapper that can actually be serviced without removing the riser and all associated tubes?
