Year of 40 ELO (only 6 digit SN)?

Hi, I've read & re-read just about every thread here but haven't found my answer - a bit of help would be appreciated. I've just bought a boat fitted with a 40 HP Oil Injected Mariner motor ( 40 ELO, lE9L, SN: 430989. The serial # is what's throwing me... it's only 6 digits -- I'm sure it's correct because it's actually on both sides of the lower end just under the power head, clear, concise and clean. It 'should' be an 88 or 89 but ?? I can only find references to 7 digit SN/s. Thanks for your time on this one.
 
"Haventaclue", Sir, it's 20 minutes to midnight & I just got home and read your response..... grabbed a flashlight & rechecked my #'s and.... YOU ARE RIGHT! It is '6E9'! It's listed on both sides and I still screwed it up. I'm calling my eye doctor tomorrow morning. Many thanks.
