1988 175hp VRO speed cuts out

I don't know what keeps happening to my posts, they keep disappearing. Here it is again. I have a 1988 Evinrude 175hp outboard which up until this summer has given me flawless performance. Lately it had started going to half speed even at full throttle. I will usually happen right after I accelerate to half or full throttle. Without warning the motor will cut out and go to 10 miles per hour even though the throttle is fully depresssed. If I bring the throttle back to neutral and then accelerate again, sometimes it will clear up and sometimes not. If it does clear it might run the rest of the day without a problem. I have changed the fuel filter and the gas primer bulb without any change. I had a mechanic look at it and he thinks it might be a failing VRO pump and sensor with the sensor shutting the motor down due to lack of oil flow to keep it from blowing up. I am not so sure of this and seem to be tending toward an igition problem. Does anyone have an suggestions?
