Do i need a new thermostat?? 1961 10hp

Ok, 61 10hp sportwin evinrude. What would indicate that a new thermostat is needed? Runs real good since i applied the tlc and $$$. Purchased a new t-stat, and just wondered when is it a good time to replace. Thanks

Running to cold.
Running hot with no other causes

Why did you buy the thermostat?

No point in replacing it if it is running at the correct temperature..... on the other had a new part still in its carton is doing no good.

WHATS TOO HOT? WHATS TOO COLD? NOT LIKE THERES A TEMP GAUGE ON THIS THING. WATER IS ALWAYS EXITING THE EXAUST. BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE EVEN IF THE THING WAS STUCK OPEN OR CLOSED. IT DOESNT SEEM TO OVERHEAT (I CAN HOLD MY HAND ON IT AT OPERATING TEMP FOR A FEW SECONDS). RUNNING TOO COLD??? HOW :confused:

If you can hold your hand on the head for a few seconds (and it feels pretty warm) you're good to go.
