140 I/O Mercruiser Motor Surging

My v-6 motor runs great most of the time. But every once in a while when running at our cursing speed 3 thousand RPM the motor will drop 3 to 4 hundred RPM & then in a couple of seconds it will come right back up with-out touching the throttle. Then we might be running for 20 to 30 min. before it does it again. I've changed fuel filter & checked fuel pressure. The motor is 1995 w/single carb. :confused:

When the gauge needle drops does the engine power drop w/it? If it does there may be water in the fuel tank. Put 2 bottles of fuel drier in the fuel tank.

That's where I usually cruise at!

So I'm a little confused. You have a 140 and a V-6? Either way install a fuel/water seperator.
