Paragon trannie V-drive. Water in fluid

Found Water in my Paragon V-drive. Should be simple fix (gasket). Question is, can I disconnect the cooling water short term until part located? More importantly, what type fluid does the V-drive require?
 
It's not the actual transmission. That uses an external cooler and runs on Dexron. My problem is with the V-drive which has an actual cooling jacket in the casting.
 
Oil should be 30 weight. Do not run the unit with water disconnected, keeps oil cool. Heat will kill it. Doesn't the raw water go through there first then to your engine?
