Trim Switch Question

The tilt/trim switch on my 1995 4.3LX/Alpha 1 only goes down. I jumped the solinoid back at the pump and the drive came right up so something is wrong in the switch circuitry. Is there a trim limit switch like there used to be on the old 3-button trim systems and if so, how does it work, i.e. there isn't a 3rd button to bypass the limit switch so how does it know when to limit the travel and when to let it come all the way up? Is there a switch on the shift linkage or something to only let it come up when it's in neutral? Or am I overcomplicating this issue and I most likely just have a bad switch?
