Steering Wheel replacement

OK, so here is a Mercury question that does not involve fuel, carbs, pumps, reeds, pistons etc etc!!

My boat still has the original steering wheel that came with the 1988 Merc 90. It uses the Ride Guide system. Now, the steering wheel is large in diameter, and the wheel grip itself is thin. I'd like to replace it with a more modern, smaller diameter with a fatter grip.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Can you get kits to fit a new wheel to this older system???

Thanks,

Donald.

If you simply want to replace the steering wheel (everything else is fine), just pull it and take it shopping with you.

Most steering wheels are interchangable between brands/mfgs.

Merc did however, use two different tapers on the mount itself - a square one (early on) which was kinda proprietary - then they "relented" and went to a standard (round) taper.

If you have a round (spindle) on your helm you can pick what you like - if you have the square style you might have to do alot of looking (Merc doesn't even build wheels to fit those anymore) or change out your system (Teleflex has a "steering in a box" package for under 200 bucks that has everything, including the wheel)....
