Sensor 2003 5.0 L

I have a 2003 Bayliner with 5 liter engine. Last year, I had ignition problems. A mechanic replaced a part in the distributor, and called it a PEP. (primary ignition ...). I just had another failure, and think it is the same thing. A look at the parts book indicates this may be a sensor, not a PEP. Another guy in this forum talked about replacing the part. The mechanic I talked with last year said that that particular year had a lot of problems with this part. My question is "Is there a better part to replace this with?" I only got about 200 hrs on the last one. I think the part is Sierra 18-5116-1
