water getting to engine???

Is there any way to tell if there is water getting to the engine from the lower unit?? I'm just worried that it's not getting there. I took it out for the first time on the 4th and it did great, but I just want to be sure that the engine is being cooled properly. There is no "tell-tale", that's the only reason I ask.

It would help if I knew what engine we are talking about, but in general the exhaust needs to be cooled at all times, even when the thermostats are closed. So the plate covering the exhaust should not get too hot to touch. If you have a temp probe the temp should not get very high at all. On small engines only part of this plate is covering a water jacket, so part of it may be much hotter than the rest.

well it is your best bet just to put a new water pump kit in!
DO NOT just put a new impeller in... you need to change the gaskets and o-rings ect... alot cheaper then finding out the hard way anyways! they should be changed every four-five years anyways regardless.
