Rubber bits should backwash out of the cooler. Just detach the output hose at the HE, the input hose at the pump and use a garden hose to force water backwards.
You didn't run the pump dry, I hope? That willl kill even a new impeller. The U cooler may need a acid dip or internal inspection if the backwash doesn't work.
