best way to locate vacuum leak?

What is the best way to check for the location of a vacuum leak without blowing yourself up? I have heard about using carb spray cleaner, propane... all seems rather dangerous down in the engine compartment of a boat. Also does anyone know if there is alot of valve overlap in the 8.2 MPI series crusader engines?

usually, a vacuum leak will 'whistle' if it is small. try using a stethoscope to narrow things done. The only ones you have trouble with (doing it this way) are the intake valve guides. Start with the hoses and then the throttle body and intake joints.

Not "a lot" of valve overlap - really depends upon your reference.
